From the beginning of December 2021 to mid-February 2022 we were in California. It had been a while since we had been to the United States. We sold our home in Florida in 2015 and it was impossible to travel to the US at the beginning of the pandemic. Time for California winter travel.

We chose winter in California because of the mild climate and because we just wanted to be there. There were also excellent opportunities to sit houses.

In the end we were in Los Gatos in the Santa Cruz mountains for 7 weeks where we took care of a house and the cat Lenny. And we were in Petaluma for more than two weeks where we looked after a house and the closet Sissy. Click the header to find out about best places to visit in the Bay Area in winter.

At the end of the summer of 2021 we spent a few weeks in France with our camper. It is great to be in France in the late summer and there are always places where you have never been or want to return. So from the end of August until the beginning of October we visited a few of those places and we were lucky, it was wonderfully warm late summer weather during that period.

We traveled from the Netherlands to the Alsace and visited Strasbourg and the wine region. Via the Vosges where we enjoyed walking and cycling we ended up in the Correze, bordering the Dordogne. Via the west coast we traveled to Ile de Re and when the weather turned bad we visited the Champagne region on the way back to the Netherlands.

From March 15th until the end of April 2021 we were on the island of El Hierro.
It is the smallest and least inhabited island of the Canary Islands. Although La Gomera is also small, raw and authentic, this is even more true for El Hierro. Like all other Canary Islands, it is a vulcanic island.
It is characterized by a steep high volcanic mountain ridge that covers most of the island. Both in the east and north there are beautiful valleys that differ from each other in terms of landscape. It is striking and peculiar that this fantastic island has not yet been discovered by the mainstream public, because there is so much to do and experience for everyone.

At the end of 2020 we have been on the island of La Gomera for just over 6 weeks. La Gomera is one of the Canary Islands and is the second smallest island (El Hierro is even smaller).
La Gomera is also one of the still really pristine islands. The island looks authentic and is sparsely populated. It is characterized by the shape in which ridges with deep barranco’s determine the shape of the island like a citrus press. The island has much less tourism than Gran Canaria and Tenerife and mainly attracts nature lovers and hikers.
The hiking opportunities and hiking trails are fantastic on La Gomera. When you click the link in the header you will learn all about La Gomera.

In the first months of 2021 we spent 10 weeks on the island of La Palma.
La Palma is one of the Canary Islands, it is located the most northwestern and is considered the greenest of the islands. La Palma is a vulcanic island and distinguishes itself from Tenerife and Gran Canaria, among others, because there is less mass tourism.
There are more visitors than on, for example, La Gomera and El Hierro. Most of these visitors come for the nature and the many fantastic hiking trails. But La Palma has more to offer than that, like some beautiful beaches. And there are several fun excursion possibilities, such as visiting the vulcanic caves.

In October and November of 2018 we spent almost 4 weeks in New Zealand. After a day of settling in Auckland we picked up the campervan and started driving south.
We visited both the North Island and the South Island. In these 4 fantastic weeks we drove (too) many kilometers but also experienced a lot. But seeing and experiencing New Zealand completely in four weeks is impossible.
As soon as the opportunity arises, we will definitely go back and then for a longer period of time.

When we were in California we got a great opportunity for a housesit in Oregon for more than two weeks. Neither of us had really been to Oregon before and we thought it would be a fantastic opportunity to get to know Oregon in the winter and to travel Oregon.

So we drove almost 1000 km from California to Eugene in Oregon to sit a house with dog Lucy. In addition to being a beautiful ride, it was also a beautiful few weeks in Oregon.

From Eugene we took Lucy to the beautiful stretches of beaches and to the mountains where there was still a lot of fresh snow. And of course we also explored Eugene and its surroundings. Click the header to learn more about the best places to visit in Oregon and for a small Oregon roadtrip.

It was now the fall of 2021 and we had been on our world trip for an indefinite period of time for about 1 year. It was also still in the middle of the Covid pandemic and that cuased that we had only been in Europe up to that point. That is absolutely not a punishment because Europe has so many beautiful places. You can travel around for a lifetime and still not see everything.

But of course we wanted more and at the beginning of October 2021 we travelled to Mexico. In the end we travelled around for almost two months, a large part on the Yucatan peninsula. But we also went to Mexico City and from there took the bus to Puebla and Oaxaca.

From the end of June 2021 to the end of August 2021 we travelled through Denmark and Sweden with our camper.
In Denmark we travelled along the Danish Wadden Islands, which are very similar to the Dutch Wadden Islands. Then via the south coast, where we spent a few days around Faaborg and Svendborg, towards Copenhagen to visit this city and its surroundings.
From Copenhagen, the crossing to Sweden via the Oresund Bridge is made in no time. In Sweden we had a few wonderful weeks in Smaland in the lake area and on the island of Oland, also because the weather was beautiful then.
Via the Kosterhavets national park we went to the west coast to go down the coast to Goteborg. There we took the boat back to Denmark.
