Palmerita Cafe
Since we eat as much plant-based food as possible, it can sometimes be a challenge for us to find a nice eatery. During our entire period in the Canary Islands this was quite difficult. On La Palma, however, there is a super nice eatery that is mainly vegan and vegetarian oriented. Palmerita Cafe is located in the La Laguna district of the town of Los Llanos. You can get the tastiest vegan and vegetarian dishes and delicious cakes and sweets. Read in this blog about Palmerita Cafe, the owners Laura and Jorge and their staff and why we had such a good time.
During our first period in the Canary Islands we searched on Tenerife and La Gomera for an opportunity where we could eat plant-based food. La Gomera does have an eatery in the village of Valle Gran Rey (Noah's Ark) but we haven't been there. Unfortunately, it was not open often in December 2020. In addition, at La Gomera we mainly took rest and cooked delicious plant-based for ourselves. In Tenerife we got take away from Sweet Paradise once in Santa Cruz. Those were nice croquettes and sandwiches with humus and vegetable spread. When we were on La Palma in January it was Geert's birthday. We felt like celebrating that outside the door in a fun and cozy way as well. So we went looking for an eatery with good vegan options. And on La Palma we found the Palmerita Cafe, a 20 minute drive from Las Indias. And that turned out to be a hit!
Palmerita Cafe focuses on breakfast and lunch and is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 9.00 – 17.00. When we first went we reserved for lunch. Palmerita Cafe is located in La Laguna, which is a small neighborhood just outside Los Llanos on the south side towards the coast. It's on the road, but it doesn't matter at all. The terrace which has mostly sun all day is at the back. And it's wonderfully quiet and nothing bothers you while sitting on the terrace. Well, the church tower of La Laguna is next to the terrace and the clock strikes every half hour. But that's just fun! When you enter the cafe, at the right is immediately the small counter with the kitchen behind it. But that counter immediately attracts attention, a display case full of delicious homemade vegan cakes, sweet and deserts. If you walk through you will enter the inner part where there are about 20 seats. If you walk through, you will come to the spacious and very cozy terrace at the back of the cafe. Here are maybe about 25 more seats. Of these, there are also a number at two large tables that are under a canopy. In the garden, the beautiful large palm tree in the middle stands out as well as the flowers throughout the terrace garden. It immediately has a very nice feeling.
At our first lunch we immediately sat outside and had an extensive lunch. We're being helped by Laura, the owner. Laura and her husband Jorge started Palmerita Cafe approx two years ago. And for them it is especially important that they serve their customers healthy, responsible and tasty dishes and drinks. On the lunch menu are a number of small lunch appetizers, a homemade soup, a delicious salad and a main dish. The nice thing is that the lunch menu changes every week. That ensures that you to go back at least once a week. At the first lunch, Ella had a homemade sandwich with a vegetable omelette and the salad beforehand. Geert also had the salad but had opted for a desert and that was the homemade Tiramisu. All these dishes were nothing short of exquisite. In addition, we both had a smoothie, these are all made from pure fruit and are great. It was obvious, Laura and Jorge are doing a great job with their staff.
As we had a lovely lunch and Palmerita Cafe also has very good breakfast options we went back for breakfast the following week. In January and February it can be fresh in the morning on La Palma but we were lucky. A radiant sun so we could enjoy breakfast outside in shorts and skirts. The breakfast menu includes various pancakes, homemade sandwiches and tostados and organic yogurt with granola and/or fruit. Ella opted for two sandwiches, a delicious smoothie and a few tasty coffees. For the coffees you can also opt for soy milk or oat milk. The nice thing is that this is the most common thing at more and more coffee shops in the Canary Islands. Geert of course went for the pancakes, he took three because they are not very big. But they are extremely tasty!
In the weeks that followed that we were still on La Palma we went to Palmerita Cafe at least once a week. Even when our friend Thomas was there we took him and we sat in the sun all afternoon. And of course ordered all kinds of goodies from the menu. It is just very nice that on La Palma there is such an opportunity where the tastiest things are served that are also healthy.
But Palmerita Cafe is also just a very cozy place. It is always busy and cozy and Laura and Jorge make you always feel at home. In the weeks we were there, we got to know them better and made new friends. When we come back to La Palma we definitely go directly to Palmerita Cafe and enjoy all the delicious and the conviviality. Laura and Jorge, thank you!
