From October 15th 2021 until December 2nd 2021 we travelled around Mexico. We started on the Yucatan peninsula where we cruised for 4 weeks. After that we travelled to Mexico City, we stayed there for 9 days. And from there we took the bus to Puebla and Oaxaca for another two weeks.

Mexico

On Friday October 15th 2021, we flew from Alicante, where we visited Geert's brother and his wife for a week, via Madrid to Cancun in Mexico. We chose Mexico for a number of reasons. First of all, we were naturally curious about the country after the many good and enthusiastic stories from other travellers. Second, Mexico was a good country to travel to during the covid period at that time. And thirdly, it was a good basis for any further travel plans in the winter of 2021/2022. From Mexico we could go in all directions, towards North America, as well as Central America and South America. Many options were open at that time.

We have the time and travel slow and therefore always consciously choose to land somewhere as relaxed as possible. This time we chose to do that in Cancun. On the one hand because we landed there with the plane and could therefore easily get to our first destination, on the other hand because we were able to make further plans from Cancun. In addition, we always make ourselves comfortable in the first days so that we immediately have a good feeling. That is why we had chosen a comfortable accommodation where we could spend our first days well and quietly, and this accommodation was Casa Tortugas.

We stayed 5 nights at Casa Tortugas, an amazing accommodation in Cancun. A boutique hotel with not too many rooms and a personal touch and completely different from most resorts in Cancun.

With the lovely help of the owners Cristina and Alex, we made our plans for the first weeks in Mexico from this great relaxed accommodation. And we made a nice exploratory trip to Isla Mujeres.

Cancun

After 5 days in Cancun we picked up our rental car and drove to Valladolid, in the heart of the Yucatan peninsula. it is not a far drive from Cancun to Valladolid, approx 160km across the highway. Actually there is only one straight road from Cancun to Valladolid. But you can choose, the well pvaed road which is a toll road or the less paved road which is not a toll road; for a few pesos (355) we took the toll road.

We knew we would be back in Valladolid later in this trip because we were meeting friends there so this stop was for 2 nights. For this stop we decided to stay with a local family which was really good and good fun. Casa Palagui is run by Silvia and Francesco and they do a terrific job. The rooms are spacious and clean, located in their green and lush garden in the middle of town and they serve a home cooked delicious breakfast. And for us they cooked a vegan breakfast with hot spicy vegetable soup. Valladolid and Casa Palagui were the perfect location for a few great trips in the area.

Valladolid is a small town in the heart of the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico with approx 45.000 inhabitants. The town center is verly lively with lots of authentic shops and resturants, and a very cozy central plaza where you will find the Cathedral as well.

Valladolid is the perfect base to visit the Maya ruines of Chichen Itza (40 km west of Valladolid) and Ek Balam (30km north of Valladolid). Furthermore there are numerous cenotes. A cenote is a natural pit, or sinkhole, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater and in many cenotes you can have a lovely swim.
