Camper lifestyle

First experience

In 2018 we went to New Zealand and decided to travel around there in a small campervan, sort of a first test. We drove around in a small campervan for almost 4 weeks, but actually it was more of a large spacious car that you could convert to a campervan. We had 4 fantastic weeks, but the final conclusion was that such a model was just a bit too small, and converting every day or regularly was not what we were looking for. But the final conclusion was also and above all that this is a great way to travel. And it has helped strengthen our decision to travel for longer periods of time faster than we originally planned. We had fallen in love with free spirit travel, sleeping in great places, living simple and almost stress-free and meeting fellow and beautiful people.

Travelling with a camper

A significant part of our indefinite journey is travelling with a camper or campervan.

Our plans to travel indefinitely are not from yesterday, we have had these ideas for years. In addition, we always had the idea to do parts of our journey with a camper or campervan. Why? Just because we thought it would be fun and we had good experiences with road trips by car.

When we where in New Zealand, we decided to travel around there in a small campervan, a kind of first test. We drove around in that little camper for almost four weeks. Actually, it was more of a spacious car that you could convert into a camper.

We had a fantastic trip. However, the final conclusion was that such a model was just a little too small.

Converting the bedding area every day was not what we were looking for. But the final conclusion was also that this is a great way to travel. It had strengthened our decision to travel faster for longer periods of time than originally planned.

Next steps towards our own camper

It was clear that we were looking for something bigger. In the summer of 2019 we rented a 7.5 meter long camper for three weeks. With this we drove through Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.

We soon found out that this model camper might be a bit on the large side for us. Especially moving in smaller streets in villages was often a challenge with a large vehicle. We liked this large model in terms of space and comfort. In the end we did a 'test' weekend camping with a somewhat smaller camper. The conclusion was that this way of travelling and living increasingly appealed to us. It certainly made us decide to start our journey in 2020.

When we made the decision to sell our house and quit our jobs in the spring of 2020, nothing could stop us.

We had camped in different models, we knew what we wanted and what we didn't want. For example, the bed. We are not going on holiday for three weeks, oh no, we actually are going to live in it. We also thought comfort was important. You live outside a lot, but in our mind we also wanted to travel to colder places.
And because our thoughts went out to a somewhat larger motorhome, we decided to purchase electric bicycles. This way we could park the camper outside the city and then move around by bicycle.

In the summer of 2020 we bought our camper. A beautiful Dethleffs from 2015. Proud as we were, we packed our things and left the Netherlands after the transfer of our house in early September. Our journey had started!

You read that right, our journey started during the corona pandemic. We drove through Europe in our own house on wheels. We did Germany, Switzerland and Italy at our leisure, after all, we had plenty of time. It was now early November and borders started to close more and more because of the corona infections. We then decided to drive back to the Netherlands, park the camper and catch the plane. You can read more about this in our travel blogs of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro.

Travelling with our own camper

In the end we made so many beautiful trips. With the camper in Central Europe and Scandinavia. Outside Europe we travel either by public transport or we rent a car. And…. every now and then we enjoy travelling abroad with a small van or other kind of vehicle.

In the summer of 2022 we made a trip to Norway with our camper. Unfortunately, we could not get to the beautiful little spots on the water or in the woods with our large camper, where we really wanted to be.

Living in different vehicles has also given us different insights. We now know that a lot of interior space is less important to us. That doesn't alter the fact that ‘comfort and practicality' is still at the top of our list.

Should we keep the motorhome or sell it and award it to new travellers? That's a question we've been pondering for weeks. Our camper had also become our home.
In the summer of 2022, clarity came to us and we made the decision. We sold the camper and left for a longer period to Asia and Oceania.
