Visit the Australian Open

Watching the Australian Open on TV is second best... – go visit the Australian Open and experience it live!

I have had the pleasure and privilege of attending the Australian Open twice, in 2023 and 2024, and I am gearing up for my third visit in 2025. Having been to all the Grand Slams, I can confidently say that the Australian Open is my favorite. In this article, I will explain why and share everything you need to know to attend this incredible Grand Slam tennis tournament in Melbourne.

What is the Australian Open?

The Australian Open is one of the four prestigious Grand Slam tennis tournaments, alongside Wimbledon, the US Open, and the French Open. Held annually in January, it marks the start of the annual professional tennis calendar and brings together the best players from around the globe. Known for its high-energy atmosphere, remarkable blue courts, and world-class matches, the Australian Open offers an experience unlike any other.

Nicknamed the "Happy Slam," the tournament is renowned for its friendly vibe and innovation. It was the first Grand Slam to introduce night matches, extreme heat policies, and a retractable roof over its courts, like the Rod Laver Arena. Matches are held at Melbourne Park, featuring arenas like Rod Laver Arena and Margaret Court Arena, providing an intimate setting for spectators. Beyond the matches, the Australian Open is a festival of entertainment, with live music, food stalls, and activities for all ages.

Whether you are a tennis fanatic like me, or simply seeking a vibrant summer event, the Australian Open delivers excitement and unforgettable (tennis) memories.

When is the Australian Open?

The Australian Open takes place every January, kicking off the Grand Slam season. The main tournament typically spans two weeks, starting in mid-January and wrapping up with the men’s and women’s finals on the last weekend of the month. In 2025, for instance, the main tournament runs from January 12 to January 26. But be aware, in the week before there is a lot of exciting tennis and entertaiment during AO Opening week with the qualifying for the main draw and many other fun events.

The timing of the Australian Open could not be more perfect for tennis fans and travelers alike. January is peak summer in Melbourne, offering warm weather and a festive atmosphere. It is also a great time to explore the city and its surroundings, as many events and activities coincide with the Australian Open.

Planning ahead is key, as tickets and accommodations can sell out quickly during this period. Keep an eye on the official Australian Open website for the exact dates each year, as well as ticket release information. Whether you are visiting for a day or staying for the entire tournament, January in Melbourne promises a blend of top-tier tennis action and summer fun.

Where is the Australian Open and how easy is it to reach?

The Australian Open takes place at Melbourne Park, located on the banks of the Yarra River in Melbourne, Australia. The venue is really close to the city center, making it incredibly accessible for visitors.

Getting to Melbourne Park is a super easy. If you are staying in the CBD, it is only a short walk or tram ride away. The free (green) tram zone in Melbourne covers most of the city center, and trams heading to the venue are frequent and well-marked. You can also take a train to Richmond or Jolimont stations, both within walking distance of the park. For those driving, parking is available nearby, though spaces can fill up quickly during the tournament.

Melbourne’s efficient public transport system ensures you will not face any hassle reaching the Australian Open, whether you are coming from the suburbs or the city center. And if you are flying in, Melbourne Airport is well-connected to the city by bus or taxi, making your journey seamless.

How to get tickets to the Australian Open

Getting tickets to the Australian Open is straightforward and surprisingly affordable. Tickets are sold through Ticketmaster, the official ticketing partner of the tournament. They are typically released a few months in advance (October), so it is always wise to plan ahead to secure your preferred seats. However, it is always relatively easy to get a ground pass for the first week at the last moment. And there are even special night session ground passes available.

Options range from ground passes, which grant access to outer courts and the lively Melbourne Park precinct, to reserved seating in major arenas like Rod Laver Arena. Ground passes are a fantastic value, allowing you to soak up the atmosphere and catch multiple matches for a reasonable price. They are already available from $49,- (AUD) for a full day of fantastic tennis.

For premium experiences, consider booking tickets for the night sessions or finals. Prices vary depending on the session and seating category, but there is something for every budget. With the ease of online booking and a transparent pricing system, attending the Australian Open is accessible to tennis fans from all walks of life.

And that is one of the reasons it makes it the most accessible Grand Slam in my opinion.

Where to stay?

Choosing the right accommodation is important for a stress-free Australian Open experience. The closer you are (to Melbourne Park and CBD), the better. Here are three excellent options nearby Melbourne Park:

So here is why the Australian Open!

The Australian Open is not just a tennis tournament; it is an experience. From the moment you step into Melbourne Park, you are greeted by an electric atmosphere. The combination of world-class tennis, summer vibes, and Melbourne’s lively culture makes this Grand Slam truly unique.

What sets the Australian Open apart is its accessibility and inclusivity. Whether you are sitting courtside at Rod Laver Arena or enjoying a ground pass, the excitement is palpable. The on-site entertainment, great food options, and interactive fan zones ensure there is never a dull moment.

As someone who has attended all the Grand Slams, I can confidently say that the Australian Open captures the essence of tennis in a way no other tournament does. It is the perfect blend of sport and fun and the weather is always brilliant, making this a bucket-list visit for tennis fans and casual spectators alike.

In the end it is all about the tennis. As a former teaching pro and coach there is no better experience to watch a long five set match in the first rounds on one of the packed outside courts, preferably at night. But ofcourse watching an exciting match in one of the arenas is fantastic as well. And even watching some practice sessions can be great fun, the best opportunity to watch the best players from real close.

So pack your sunscreen (factor 50, this is Australia mate!), grab a ground pass, and get ready to immerse yourself in the magic of the Happy Slam!
